IN MEMORY OF HARRIETT MURPHY SHORTT

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Harriett Murphy Shortt (born September 13, 1928 in Seattle, WA) passed away on July 15, 2007 surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her brother John, her daughter Shannon, four sons (Bruce, Eric, Bob and Will), eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Harriett graduated from the University of Washington twice, earning her B.A. and later her M.A. in Public Health Nursing. In 1951 she joined the Army and proudly served in the nursing corps in Germany during the Korean War. She was honorably discharged in 1953.

It was in the Army that Harriett met her first husband, George Olson, who died as a young man of leukemia. Harriett later met Bill Shortt to whom she was married for 43 years. She was a lucky woman to have had two good men as husbands in her lifetime.

Harriett and her husband Bill were residents of Federal Way for 38 years. During that time, Harriett was a dedicated school nurse as well as the informal neighborhood nurse for her neighbors and all her children's friends. She was well-known for her baking skills. Her Christmas braid and apple pies live on as a family tradition. Later, Harriett moved to Bellingham to be closer to her daughter where she acquired many new friends.

Harriett lived productively with M.S. for nearly 30 years and was very active in the King County M.S. Society. There will be a private gathering of the family to honor her life. Others may do the same by sending donations to the King County Chapter of the M.S. Society.
